What is Prominent Ear?

Prominent ear deformity is when the ear extends more vertically from the head when viewed from the front or appears more prominently when viewed from behind. There are many names such as prominent ear, prominent ear, sail ear.

One or both ears can be affected in prominent ear deformity, which is a common deformity in the community. This situation does not cause any health problems, but it can affect the person psychologically; It can cause problems especially in primary school-age children.

What is the Cause of Prominent Ear Appearance?

In the ear, there are anatomical folds called antihelix, spoon-like cartilage structures called concha (auricle). Prominent ear appearance can be caused by different abnormalities in these anatomical structures.

Three conditions cause this appearance
Less antihelical curvature than normal
The fact that the auricle, called the concha, has grown more than necessary

When Can Prominent Ear Surgery Be Performed?

Ear development continues rapidly after birth, and development is largely completed at 5-6 years of age. It is more appropriate to perform the surgery at this age, which coincides with the preschool period of children, as it will also provide psychological benefits. After these ages, surgery can be performed at any age.
